Dr. Cormac Walsh is an independent researcher and lecturer, based in Hamburg, Northern Germany. His recent research on coastal management, nature conservation and regional development at the Wadden Sea coast of Germany, the Netherlands and Denmark, was funded by the German Research Foundation (2016-2020) at the University of Hamburg, Institute for Geography). Following his undergraduate studies at NUI Maynooth (BA Geography), Cormac completed an MSc in Geography (Global Transformations) at Loughborough University, UK, and a PhD at University College Dublin (Planning and Public Policy). His PhD research, completed in 2010, examined processes of strategic spatial planning in the Dublin City-Region, focussing in particular on the Strategic / Regional Planning Guidelines for the Greater Dublin Area. He has subsequently worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the National Institute for Regional and Spatial Analysis, Maynooth, gaining international and cross-border experience as ESPON Contact Point and through research on ICLRD projects. He has worked on a wide range of themes for ICLRD including river basin management, functional territories, indicators and spatial monitoring frameworks.
Based in Hamburg since 2011, Cormac continues to take a keen and active interest in the work of ICLRD and, in particular, the implications of Brexit for cross-border cooperation and spatial planning on the island of Ireland.
Research Interests: Strategic spatial planning, cross-border cooperation, functional regions, coastal management, nature conservation, and regional governance.
