Much of the ICLRD’s applied and action research seeks to influence practice, and policy innovation, in relation to advancing social, environmental and economic well-being. In adopting principles of place-based working, co-design and co-production, this thematic research stream offers evidence and insights into ways of working collaboratively, and valuing asset-based approaches, to build a rich picture of systems from a local perspective on promoting prosperous, shared and sustainable communities across the island of Ireland and beyond. Substantial change has occurred in public administration, governance models, and public service design and delivery in recent decades, transforming the relationship between public, private and community sectors. In addition to offering a research specialism in the field of spatial planning, the ICLRD continues to offer a unique all island perspective on the evolving mechanisms for modernising the process of planning, providing and improving public services, known as ‘community planning’, which are in the public interest, aim to enhance well-being outcomes and empower communities.
